currumbin ecovillage studio

Located in the Currumbin Ecovillage, the brief for this project was to convert an existing double garage into a single bedroom Studio / Secondary Dwelling. The existing garage had a 1.5 metre wide storage area on its northern side, under the lower end of its skillion roof. To gain the requirement ceiling height for residential buildings and open the Studio up to the northern sun, we re-pitched half of the roof, butterflying it, which allowed additional highlight windows along the new northern living spaces. The building was also extended to the east to create a useable Living Room.

The finish Studio runs on solar power with battery storage, has a heat pump hot water system, grey water system, low E glazing, floor, wall and ceiling insulation, rain water harvesting system, low wattage lighting throughout, finished low VOC paints, as well as other environmental conscious materials and systems.

Where possible demolish materials were reincorporated into the new construction, and all new material selections were based on minimising the projects ecological footprint and the toxic off-gassing for its inhabitants.
