hawke residence

Mutiara is a circa 1896 heritage list home proudly sited overlooking both the Fremantle shipping harbour out to the sea, and down the Swan River. Coincidentially, this was the second time I’ve completed work on this property. In the 90s bradleycole created a bed and breakfast in the back of the house for the then owners. It has changed hands a couple of times since, but has recently become the home for the growing Hawke family.

The brief this time around was to renovate the 3 bathrooms, kitchen and reconfigurate the existing Laundry / main Bathroom area creating and additional private Powder Room for guests. Amongst other things we also added a grand quartzite fireplace in the Dining room and added new lighting throughout with the help of illumebydesign. All of these works were contained within the rear two storey additions that were add to Mutiara in 2002. Given this, our approach was to take some of Mutiara’s original design elements, like the window fenestration and building materials, and rearticulated them in contrasting modern aesthetic.

Where possible demolish materials were reincorporated into the new construction, and all new material selections were based on minimising the projects ecological footprint and the toxic off-gassing for its inhabitants.
